In the article the ancient process of Enfleurage is explained and you can see beautiful photos of our farm. We are open for visitors again starting on Mother's Day 2024. A Bit About Enfleurage

In Enfleurage, the chassis is charged with 33 daily fresh lilac flower changes in the ancient process of cold fat absorption.

The scent is astonishing, ethereal, and authentic, albeit ephemeral, fleeting and ghostly.

PLEASE NOTE:, real lilac enfleurage is going to be much lighter and softer and more intimate and private than a synthetic lilac fragrance. It will not be able to compete with the strong smells of synthetics, derivatives or CO2 extractions or fragrance that has been extracted using hexane and other solvents. So I think I must emphasize in my listing that this is a natural handmade enfleurage product, and will be much different than anything store bought.

Enfleurage is the French term for an ancient, labor intensive, and all-but vanished, technique in which a fat is used to absorb scent from fresh exhaling flowers.

Enfleurage captures the most delicate components of scent and the most comprehensive spectrum of scent molecules.

Lilac does not lend itself to distillation and other methods collect only fractions of the scent and leave behind or destroy certain elements. Traditional Enfleurage yields the most authentic essence of lilac.

At Cherry Valley Lilacs the practice of Enfleurage is our focal jewel. Here we have more than 150 different varieties of lilacs growing in our exhibit garden. More than 30 different lilacs of the most fragrant varieties go into making our organi enfleurage pomades. I have revitalized this ancient method of scent extraction and brought it back from near extinction. In past seasons hundreds of visitors have come to the farm to witness this ancient practice in action. Come visit and take a whiff inside the Perfumery or attend a workshop with me, CharlePan, and make luscious body butters and aromatherapy products for yourself. I believe the Art of Enfleurage is a beautiful ancient practice, a sublime home craft like canning, sewing, embroidery, gardening, writing poetry, or playing the violin, that has been lost in time. I have sought to revitalize this ancient practice, making it accessible to every one.

I use only organic and sustainably produced oils in our pomade. Coconut, palm and cocoa butter are appropriate fats for this process. The best oil to use is RSPO Sustainable Organic Palm Kernel Oil.

Certified sustainable producers of Organic Palm Kernel Oil have joined a coalition to protect rainforest habitat and produce their oil from long standing organic and sustainably managed plantations. Palm kernel oil is high in vitamin A palmitate and other phyto -nutrients and antioxidants, good for the skin and has natural Sun Protection Factor of about 3.

Enfleurage of lilac pomade is made on site at Cherry Valley Lilac Farm in upstate New York at the foothills of the Adirondacks. Spring is a fantastic crazy dance in these parts, where the growing season is so fleeting and intense.

Lilac Enfleurage Pomade is a lightly scented moisturizer, emollient, and therapeutic aromatic balm.

Pomade, a term of the past, was often used as a hair preparation, and so it became known for that primary use. My lilac enfleurage pomade is often used in hair and as a beard and mustache tamer. However, Lightly fragrant, it has been described as a solid natural perfume or aromatherapy, and it is also meant to be worn as a moisturizer, body butter, massage cream or facial butter.

The traditional use of pomades stems from the use on hair and scalp as a conditioner, hair cream, and scalp moisturizer, but this pomade is an extraction of flower essence where the organic and sustainable palm butter is used to absorb scent from fresh exhaling flowers. This pomade is a naturally lightly scented moisturizing aromatherapy product, and can be used for skin, hair, scalp, and as a calming transcendental essence for meditation, sweet dreams, and uplifting aromatherapeutic balm.

Lilac essence from fresh exhaling flowers, absorbed into a base of organic and sustainably grown RSPO palm kernel oil, is a non greasy emollient full of antioxidants, phytonutrients, naturally occurring vitamin A and Vitamin E tocopherols. It has a shelf life of several years and still holds it’s soft beautiful light fragrance without going rancid or esterification. You can savor it for many long, cold, and dreary winters. In fact solid scented pomades have been found in Egyptian tombs and still retain their fragrance. It is soul magic in a jar. 🌸

Like any artist, I do my work out of an overwhelming desire to express what is contained deep within me. All orders of Lilac Absolute Essential Oil are made to order. It is of my utmost pleasures in the world to prepare this unique and scarce product. It is the tiny breaths of flower whispers, captured in a bottle. I love it dearly and I love to share the experience of the authentic … but, before I expend my precious energies and the precious energies of my beloved flowers, please consider…

Enfleurage is by nature, ephemeral, fleeting, and very light. The pomade captures the quintessential spirit of the flower as it exhales onto a thin layer of fat. There it is held fresh until I extract the lilac absolute essential oil from the fragrant pomade. The essence enters our nostrils, our lungs and our bloodstream, it affects our psyche and changes our being through its authentic flower wisdom. The enfleuraged product does not last long on the skin in comparison to other absolutes, essential oils or department store perfumes. It is ghostly and unusual in every way. It is so rare, I am the only one in the world who makes the real extraction of lilac.

What you are purchasing from me is enfleurage. I make two main products from Lilacs, first the Lilac Enfleurage Pomade, a fragrant creamy moisturizer and lilac skincare treatment, the second product I extract from the lilac pomade is Lilac Absolute Essential Oil …It is a hand made artisan product. It takes time to make and is very precious. It is something that is extremely rare and very expensive. It is not a mainstream product and I can only make a finite amount each year. The May 2022 Better Homes and Gardens article about me, “Heaven Scent” has brought my products to the mainstream however and the average mainstream person may not appreciate the nuanced and delicate scent of enfleurage. Please take note, I cannot refund your purchase simply because it does not smell as you might have imagined, or because it is such a small size, or seems like it is too expensive. I do encourage you to contemplate and consider, read and learn about the art form, Enfleurage, before you order. Note that it is a gamble in many ways. You may not like it, you may be expecting something different, it might not suit your taste, you might not even be able to smell it. Alas, yes, some people are anosmic to the light live scent of enfleurage. Please try the smallest amount available first, then let me know if you have fallen in love, awakened a childhood memory, cried, laughed, or maybe had the first good night’s sleep in a long time from your experience with my enfleurage, then you may order the larger size…

We travel to take care of our Jasmine, Gardenia, and other tropical gardens in the winter after putting our lilacs to bed. And so will be returning to our lilac farm in New York State, in April each year before the bloom.

Lilac season at Cherry Valley Lilacs begins Mother’s Day in May and is spectacular, swift and brief, lasting until the first or second week of June. We do Enfleurage starting in early May with Viburnum, Hyacinth, and Paperwhites, then lilacs in Mid May, with Sweet English Violets, and finish up the season Enfleuraging with Mock Orange and Peonies in late June.

We are a small family farm, open for visitors Mothers Day through Mid June 10-4pm, please call ahead… and we are always available by appointment. You can visit and take the historic educational lilac tour, witness active live enfleurage going on inside the Perfumery. Stroll through the fields with more than 150 varieties of the most fragrant blooming lilacs, in a special treat we call “Lilac Bathing”…. You can purchase lilacs to plant in your garden in our lilac nursery where we grow as many as 60 different cultivars for sale. We also have several workshops each year, for which you can sign up. Our Complete Enfleurage Kit for do-it-yourself Enfleurage is available all year long. Purchase of the Enfleurage Kit comes with my self published How To book, and a full day workshop at the farm or free technical assistance in a video call, or an option for ten hours of CEUs for aromatherapists.

I practice Enfleurage as my primary form of scent extraction, here at Cherry Valley Lilacs. It is my focal jewel, concentrating my efforts to bring the artisan craft to the world of natural perfumery and skin care.

All lilac absolute essential oil is slowly and painstakingly made to order from our stores of lilac pomade, so please allow 2-3 weeks lead time, especially for larger orders.
